As per the Indian tradition, Deities were installed facing east. History has it that every morning GGG found Mahankali facing South. Further he was explicity instructed in his dreams not to change back. Hence she is known to us as Dakshinmukhi Mahankali (meaning South facing).

It is also the house of Goddess Mahalaxshmi, God Shiva, Goddess Parvati (Amba) and Lord Ganesha. All them are part of one monolithic stone as seen from outside, facing east with exception of Mahankali which faces the south.
